Sarah Gail Brand
Sarah Gail Brand was born in London in 1971. Described for years by The Wire magazine as the most exciting trombone player, Sarah has recorded and performed on the international Improvised Music and Jazz scene since the early 1990s with the likes of Mark Sanders, John Edwards, Elton Dean, writer and comedian Stewart Lee and countless others. Sarah has a long-standing acclaimed duo with drummer Mark Sanders, a trio with John Edwards and Steve Beresford, she leads her own tunes group (Sarah Gail Brand Sextet), and continues to work as a soloist as well as in ad hoc ensembles. Sarah has appeared regularly on BBC Radio, including a guest presenter spot on the Jazz on 3 programme (BBC Radio3). In addition to being a composer, Sarah’s trombone work ranges from playing Improvised Music and Jazz, studio session work to arranging brass section music and playing in pop and rock groups. Sarah has a PhD in musicology, examining Improvised Music and Interrelation. She is a professor of Improvisation at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London and leads workshops on improvisation around the world.
